Tap into Generative AI’s Potential Without Creating Your Own LLM

Everybody needs Salesforce generative AI solutions and their ground-breaking capabilities, such as content creation, text summarization, question answering, document translation, and even task completion on their own.

But, how do you include large language models (LLMs) into your infrastructure to power these applications? Is it necessary to train your own LLM? Customize an open-source model that has already been trained. Are you using existing models via APIs?

Training your own LLM is a difficult and costly undertaking. The good news is that you are not required to. Using existing LLMs via APIs enables you to tap into the power of generative AI now and create game-changing AI innovation quickly.

In this write-up, we discussed the different strategies to work with LLMs, Examine the simplest and most regularly used option in greater detail: using existing LLMs through APIs.

What is LLM?

Large language models (LLMs) are a type of artificial intelligence (AI) that can generate human-like replies by analyzing natural-language inputs.

LLMs are trained on enormous datasets, giving them a thorough comprehension of a wide range of facts. This enables LLMs to reason, draw conclusions, and create logical deductions.

Train your Own LLM

When you train your own model, you have complete control over the model architecture, the training method, and the data from which your model learns. You could, for example, train your own LLM on data particular to your industry: This model will almost certainly produce more accurate results for your domain-specific use cases than a general-purpose model.

Time: It could take weeks or even months

Resources: A large number of computational resources, such as GPU, CPU, RAM, storage, and networking, will be required.

Expertise: You’ll require a team of experts in Machine Learning (ML) and Natural Language Processing (NLP).

Data Security:  LLMs learn from enormous volumes of data – the more, the better. In contrast, data security in your firm is frequently regulated by the concept of least privilege: you provide users access to only the data they need to execute their specialized job. In other words, the fewer data collected, the better. It may not always be easy to reconcile these contradictory principles.

Personalize A Pre-Trained Open-Source Model

Open-source models, initially trained on extensive datasets, can be customized to suit your unique requirements through fine-tuning. This method offers significant time and cost savings in contrast to developing a model from scratch.

Even if you aren’t starting from zero, fine-tuning an open-source model shares several traits with the train-your-own-model approach: It still requires time and resources, a team of professional ML and NLP developers is required, and the data security tension stated above may persist.

Utilize Existing Models Using APIs

The final alternative is to leverage APIs to access existing models (from OpenAI, Anthropic, Cohere, Google, and others). It is by far the simplest and most widely used method for developing LLM-powered apps. Why?

  • You do not need to invest time and money in training your own LLM.
  • There is no need for specialized ML and NLP engineers.
  • Because the prompt is dynamically created into users’ workflows, it only includes data that they have access to.

The disadvantage of this approach? These models were not trained using your contextual or private company data. As a result, in many circumstances, the output is too generic to be truly useful. You can get around this by using a technique known as in-context learning.

Use Existing LLMs Without Compromising Your Data

The Einstein Trust Layer comes into play here. Among other things, the Einstein Trust Layer allows you to leverage existing models through APIs in a trusted manner without jeopardizing your company’s data. This is how it works:

  • Secure Gateway: To access the model, you use the Einstein Trust Layer’s secure gateway rather than direct API calls. The gateway supports many model providers and abstracts their differences. If you used the train-your-own-model or customize options outlined above, you can even plug in your own model.
  • Data Masking and Compliance: Before being sent to the model provider, the request goes through several processes, including data masking, which replaces personally identifiable information (PII) data with fictitious data to maintain data privacy and compliance.
  • Zero Retention: Salesforce has zero retention agreements with model providers to further protect your data, which means providers will not persist or train their models using data received from Salesforce.
